Chapter 7 Questions (Scott)

1. What does it mean the spiritual life is a “cooperative effort” and what do you believe this
implies?

2. Some denominations believe that the gift of the Holy Spirit can be gained and lost. Can
human‟s affect the work of the Holy Spirit to the point where it can be lost and regained
in one's life?

3. What is the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount as presented by Scott? How does Scott's
understanding contribute to the sanctification process?

  1. 1.) The spiritual life is to be a "cooperative effort" in the sense that God is not the only one doing work in the relationship, but also the believer must be actively involved in furthering their own spiritual growth. This implies that if we are true followers of Christ, we will be actively pursuing Him.

2.) According to Scott, yes. Pg. 183 reminds us of Jesus' teaching on blashpheming the Holy Spirit, and also offers verses from Ephesians, I Thess. and Hebrews that support this viewpoint.

3.) Scott presents the purpose of the Sermon on the Mount to be a sampling of Jesus' teachings on the "type of life and attitudes expected of those who are citizens of the Kingdom of God."Scott's understanding of these passages of Scripture, particularly Matthew 5:48 "Be ye perfect even as your Father in heaven is perfect" means that believers are to pursue spiritual maturity whole-heartedly and seek to live sanctified lives.

  2. 1. God has saved us there is nothing that we have done to deserve this, however it is our duty to Glorify God and bring Honor to His name as a follower of Him - therefore it is both the efforts of God and Humans. Although Humans do nothing to retain their salvation - there will be evidence in their lifestyles.

    2. I don't believe that you can be saved apart from the Holy Spirit - the Holy Spirit is the "agent of sanctification" (p182) - if we believe that salvation cannot be lost as Baptists then it cannot be gained, lost, and regained, as some denominations teach - that would be insulting the supremacy of God

    3. The Sermon on the Mount, according to Scott, is a selected sampling of Jesus' teachings which demonstrate in general and by example the type of life and attitudes expected of those who are citizens of the Kingdom of God. The sermon on the mount shows how the person who is becoming more and more like Christ should view their life (we become less important others become more important). The sermon shows what we should aim to become as followers of Christ.
